LIVING IN PAHRUMP, NEVADA

3+ years of living in Pahrump:

I've been living in Pahrump for 3+ years now. I finally retired from work back in June of 06. Not doing the drive to Vegas every day is a big relief. I was told it takes a good year after u retire to get use to retirement. It's strange not having to go to work and make a living. But, I sure am getting use to it. Staying busy is the key, but with this summer heat its hard. Here it is midsummer, end of July 2007. The monsoon season is now upon us here in the southwest desert. I just wish it would rain. Everything is so dry. Last night I could see a glimmer of a fire on the back of Mt. Charleston. Its in too rugged a territory to try and put out by the BLM. I see the smoke all day and the amber glow of the fire at night. The dry lake is to hot to go out on and the nights are almost as hot and muggy. A/C in the house is the way to go. I'd do some work on my sandcar but the swamp cooler just barely makes it cool in the garage. Better to stay in the house. My main prority during summer is making sure the sprinker systerm stays working so as not to loose any trees or plants during the scorching summer heat My garden was delayed until June. Corn is growing great, but thats it. Oh well.... I look forward to the fall and especially the Pahrump Fall Harvest Festival in Oct....

It's now the end of Sept. 2007. The weather has cooled off considerably. Mid 80's during the day and 50's at night. It finally rained a few days ago. It rained all day and all night. Sometimes very hard to. It was refreshing. Laying in bed and listening to the rain come down was soothing. Now there's alot of mud and soft spots. The dry lake appears to have a sheet of water on it, but it is slowly disappearing. The Pahrump Fall Harvest Festival is in 2 weeks. My Grandkids and I are looking forward to going to that. Carnival, rodeo, 4h stuff. Really enjoyable country stuff.

Below are few pics of a sandstorm that blew in about 2 months ago... Thought I was in the middle east desert. Visibility dropped to near zero as you can see from below....

Mt. Charleston has a snow covered top now from the heavy rains a week or so ago. 2.75 inches of rain fell in a 24 hr period. A lot for the parched Southern Nevada Desert. Not much, but it's a sign winter is on the way.

I'm itching to convert my VW frontend to a long travel front end on my buggy. Should make a big difference in looks and handling. But, alas, the cost will be about $1600.oo just in parts. And money is tight. So, it will have to wait for a while. Plus a 4 seat VW powered buggy is next on my agenda for a build.
The PAHRUMP FALL HARVEST FESTIVAL is a celebration of the fall food harvest. It is celebrated on the first weekend of Oct. A PRO rodeo, carnival and 4h club participants showing their prized harvests from the year. Animals, vegetables, crafts etc... A great time is had by all over the 4 day event. Plus lots of entertainment, food and drink. This is a great place and time for family and kids. Vendors row has many items available. Below are a few pics from the festival. Exhibits abound.

A carnival and rodeo wouldn't be right with out a parade through town.

Above left is a ton of pork.....On the right, the ROUNDUP ride.

Night falls and the rodeo.

"hey DUDE, I thought YOU were buying this round!!!!?" But the waiter finally arrives..... After they work things out..........
