--=BIRTH OF A SAND/DESERT CAR, CV Joints And Boots--
Finishing the CV Boot Replacement and Axle Install
I needed to replace the left outer axle CV Boot. So, I pulled the axle out and disassembled it. The outer CV is a common
type ball cage CV, but I need to replace the boots. I wasn't sure how it came apart. The inner cv star is a press fit on the axle so,
I pressed it off. The outer housing for the inner CV is held in by a small C-Clip but can easily be pulled out..
The inner housing CV pops out of the rear end with a large screwdriver used for a prybar. The star on the axle is the weakest link.
This is the weakest link of the drivetrain. The inner CV triangle is below right. I pressed the 3 pin CV from the shaft.
Replaced the boots and reinstalled everything. The inner CV goes into a receptical(housing) that slides into the ring gear housing..
Also I had to put some 90w gear oil in the inner CV housing befores sealing the boot. I used a KD banding tool and seemed to work well.
Below is the inner CV housing. It needs some gear lube before installation.... I filled it up half
way then installed the axle and boot and sealed the boot with the KD banding tool.. Finally
I put it all back into the 3rd member.
I'm waiting on new drums to arrive to totally rebuild the rear brakes. New shoes, drums, hardware kit, adjuster kit and wheel cylinders...
For a total rear brake rebuild...
