--=BIRTH OF A SAND/DESERT CAR, VW Front End=-

VW Front End and Steering
The VW Font End was aligned and lower tubes were tacked in place.

By using straight cut tubes for the lower mounts it would be easier to align and center the VW front end. I used a pipe clamp at the top to give a slight tilt backwards to the front end. Once I was satisfied with the alignment I measured, cut, bent and notched the upper tubes. Everything was rechecked again and they were tack welded in place. The stands were pulled from the under the front end and it was now riding without help on the front end.

The steering shaft, bearings and goodies were all set in place. Brackets were made and welded in place. I turned the steering wheel and everything checked. It worked really great. Sooooo, I celebrated, opened a bud and marveled at my fabrication. WOULD it work out in the field???? Only time will tell. BUT, I knew I would be converting to a full swing arm front end in the near future. Many visitors to my build have asked for both. So the VW set up will be tried first.

I've been researching coil over shocks for the rear end set up. QA1, KING, CNC, RANCHO, FOX, etc..... There are many choices. Since this is NOT an OFFROAD RACE BUGGY, I see no need for big buck rear coil over shocks, gas reservoirs, etc..... QA1 coil over shocks look the way to go. Figuring the correct one is the hard part. Adjustable dual or single dampening. Spring load(about 350lbs. per rear shock). Extension, compression. All critical to handling. But it will be a coil over shock. But, I want a rolling chassis soon!!!! I gotta roll this sucka out into the daylight!!!

Another thought.... I purchased 60 #303 stamped tabs with 3/8 holes for mounting the floor from N.O.R.B. Round hole perforated aluminum will be used (.125 thickness) for the floor along with .040 sheet aluminum for the side panels. Lets see now... Shifter, gas pedal, cables, brake system, wiring, cooling system, retirement... OOoooops?!!!! That last one slipped in. June 30, 2006 is my scheduled last day of work in VEGAS @ Republic Services. Yes, no drive to Vegas everyday and NO weekly paycheck.... But I am truly looking forward to it... Plenty of time on my hands to finish my buggy and work around the house. But, $$$$ will be tight and I want to get this thing 90% done before my last day of work approaches. Then I can focus on my off road stuff full time. Maybe I can supplement my income(union pension) from my experience and hobbies.
